Coronavirus: Influencer infected after toilet bowl ‘coronavirus challenge’

The Advertiser 2020-03-26 02:38:00

A California social media prankster claims he was hospitalised with the coronavirus — just days after posting a video of himself licking a toilet bowl for a nauseating online challenge.

The TikTok personality, known as Larz, reportedly posted footage of himself in a hospital bed on Sunday, according to The Daily Mail.

“I tested positive for coronavirus,” the 21-year-old from Beverly Hills tweeted on an account that has since been suspended, the outlet reported.

It comes just two days after the prankster, who goes by the social media handle GayShawnMendes, posted a video himself on Friday running his tongue across a public toilet as part of a bizarre — and widely criticised — “coronavirus Challenge” on social media, the NY Post said.

The craze — seen mainly on TikTok, a video-sharing platform — spurs users to post footage of themselves licking everything from toilets to grocery store produce.

It wasn’t clear whether Larz’s apparent infection was linked to the stunt.

It comes as the number of infected Americans soared past 55,500 as of Wednesday afternoon, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The virus has also caused more than 800 deaths across the country.

Australia now has more than 2400 coronavirus cases.

Total confirmed cases, based on a tally of numbers provided by each state and territory, now stand at 2432 as of Wednesday morning.

There are 1029 in NSW, 466 in Victoria, 443 in Queensland, 197 in South Australia, 205 in Western Australia, 42 in Tasmania, 44 in the Australian Capital Territory and six in the Northern Territory.

Nine people have died — one in Queensland, one in Western Australia and seven in NSW.

In Victoria, two people are currently in intensive care – one in their 30s and one in their 60s.

The social media influencer has previously appeared on the Dr. Phil show, where he drew criticism for boasting about how he’d licked tubs of ice cream before putting them back in store freezers, and claimed he made “lots of money” from his online following.

A woman was slammed on social media earlier this month for an alleged “coronavirus challenge” video that has since gone viral.

Ava Louise, an accused “clout chaser” on social media who has appeared as a guest on Dr Phil twice, has gone viral for a bizarre stunt that is getting widely criticised during the global coronavirus pandemic, Fox News reported.

In the video, which was originally shared to TikTok, the 22-year-old aspiring influencer from Miami licked a toilet seat, allegedly while in a plane bathroom.

“Please (re-tweet) this so people can know how to properly be sanitary on the aeroplane,” she captioned the six-second clip.

Since posting, those online have been quick to call her out – including American political commentator Meghan McCain, the daughter of late senator John McCain, who demanded the social media star be jailed.

Others seconded McCain, slamming the woman for her antics during the deadly outbreak.

Tick Tock should do the responsible thing and take it down.

Also, Twitter could flag the site of the Tweeter and put him in the Time Out Chair for a while.

WTF is wrong with people? Are they so desperate for their 15 minutes of fame?

Her antics got her suspended from TikTok, she later revealed on Instagram.
