The votes are in, and the winners have been chosen. Ladies and gents, welcome to the biggest, most authoritative smartphone awards of the country. 91mobiles and Cashify present Smartphone Awards 2019 – Voice of the Industry. There’s a good reason why we chose to call them “the Voice of the Industry”. You see, the jury panel for these awards comprises 40 experts from the Indian tech media fraternity. These are people who come from varied backgrounds, but know their phones better than anyone else. The names include technology veterans, independent writers and consultants, popular YouTubers and senior editors of online and print publications.

The experts (listed below) have lent their years of experience, and helped select the winners for the 11 award categories in the jury segment. The votes of 40 jury members ensure that these awards are fair and free of bias, with the handset models that have won the trophies being the very best the smartphone world has to offer. But we haven’t ignored you, dear reader, for there are two award categories for which the winners have been chosen by the people. Thanks to over 50,000 votes, these categories represent the People’s Choice.

If you haven’t yet had a chance to take a look at the different award categories and the respective nominees, feel free to do it now, because we’re going to jump right to the winners.

People’s Choice

Best Designed Phone of the Year 2019

There’s no one better than the users themselves to select the winner for the Best Designed Phone of the Year. The nominees are:

  • Redmi K20 Pro
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10+
  • OPPO Reno 10x Zoom
  • OnePlus 7T
  • Huawei P30 Pro

Winner: OPPO Reno 10x Zoom

The winner of the Best Designed Phone of the Year award is the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom. The shark fin-styled pop-up camera may be the headlining aspect here, but the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom is a looker otherwise too. The phone looks gorgeous with a rear camera module that sits flush with the body, and the reflective strip that stands out at the back.

Runner’s up: Redmi K20 Pro

Most Loved Brand of the Year 2019

Our readers are an opinionated lot, and this award category takes into account how they perceive smartphone brands. The nominees are:

Winner: Xiaomi

Xiaomi is a brand that has always been about community, so it doesn’t really come as a surprise that it was a fan-favourite in 2019. It was last year when the brand changed a lot of things, from entering the Rs 20k+ segment once again with the launch of the Redmi K20 and K20 Pro, to introducing latest features such as 48MP cameras and 64MP cameras (with the Redmi Note 7 Pro and Redmi Note 8 Pro, respectively) and also doubling down on its offline strategy.

Runner’s up: OPPO

Jury Awards

Budget Smartphone of the Year 2019

The nominees for this award category are:

Winner: Xiaomi Redmi Note 8

The sibling to the Redmi Note 8 Pro brings almost the same set of features that make the latter an impressive smartphone – a quad-camera setup, a full HD+ display, and a powerful battery with fast-charging abilities, among other things. All that at a starting price of just Rs 9,999 swayed the jury in the favour of the Redmi Note 8.

Runner’s up: Realme 5s and Samsung Galaxy M10s (tie)

VFM Smartphone of the Year 2019

Here are the nominees for this award category:

Winner: Redmi Note 8 Pro

The successor to the Redmi Note 7 Pro sets quite a few benchmarks in the sub-Rs 15k segment… from being the most affordable smartphone with a high-res 64MP sensor to being equipped with the powerful, gaming-centric MediaTek’s Helio G90T processor. Add to it 6 gigs of RAM, an HDR-capable display, and a strong 4,500mAh battery, and it’s easy to see why it won this award.

Runner’s up: Realme XT

Best Affordable Flagship Phone of the Year 2019

The nominees are:

Winner: OnePlus 7T

OnePlus pioneered the affordable flagship segment and while the competition is heating up in this space, the brand’s ‘Never Settle’ mantra still ensures that it stands out from the crowd. The OnePlus 7T flaunts top-of-the-line specs such as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855+ processor, 8GB RAM, a 90Hz Fluid AMOLED display, triple rear cameras headlined by a 48MP shooter and a 3,800mAh battery with Warp Charging. But perhaps what seals the deal aren’t just specs alone, but OnePlus’ stock-like Oxygen OS that promises a smooth user experience.

Runner’s up: Realme X2 Pro

Best Mid-Range Selfie Phone of the Year 2019

Here are the nominees for this award category:

Winner: Vivo V17 Pro

Vivo was among the first brands to introduce high-resolution sensors for front cameras, along with front-facing flash units for better low-light selfies. The V17 Pro in fact, offers dual selfie shooters with 32-megapixel and 8-megapixel sensors. But that’s not all, as the cameras are neatly tucked away inside a pop-up mechanism, and also ensure impressive selfies at the same time.

Runner’s up: Redmi K20 Pro

Best Mid-Range Camera Phone of the Year 2019

Here’s the list of nominees:

  • Honor 20
  • Redmi K20 Pro
  • Realme X2 Pro
  • Samsung Galaxy A70s
  • Vivo V17 Pro

Winner: Realme X2 Pro

A 64-megapixel shooter, paired with a 13MP telephoto camera for 5x hybrid zoom, an 8MP snapper for wide-angle photography and a 2MP sensor for portrait shots – all that already makes the X2 Pro a powerful camera phone. But Realme doesn’t just stop there, you also get 4k video recording at 30/60fps, the ability to record slow-mo clips at 960fps, along with the brand’s famed software features such as Chromaboost and Nightscape. Clearly, the Realme X2 Pro sets a new benchmark for phones in its segment, and hence managed to win the hearts (and votes) of our jury members too.

Runner’s up: Redmi K20 Pro

Selfie Phone of the Year 2019

Here’s a gander at the nominees for this award:

Winner: Apple iPhone 11 Pro

While a lone 12-meg snapper at the front of the iPhone 11 Pro might not seem much when compared to powerful 32MP selfie shooters that are present on many rivals, it does manage to offer great shots in all sorts of conditions. It’s also great for vlogging as it supports 4k shooting at 30fps and full HD recording at 60fps.

Runner’s up: ASUS 6Z

Camera Phone of the Year 2019

A quick look at the nominees first:

  • Apple iPhone 11 Pro
  • OPPO Reno 10x Zoom
  • Huawei P30 Pro
  • OnePlus 7T Pro
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10+

Winner: Apple iPhone 11 Pro

Apple shook things up with its iPhone 11 Pro duo by offering an all-new 12-megapixel triple-camera array. The optically-stabilised primary camera features a wide aperture of f/1.8, and is given company by telephoto and wide-angle sensors, ensuring that you can shoot in all kinds of scenarios. The Cupertino giant also debuted its Night Mode, which kicks in automatically and is easily among the best implementation of the feature that we’ve seen on a phone. Of course, Apple’s iPhones also rank high on video capabilities, and the iPhone 11 Pro is no different.

Runner’s up: Huawei P30 Pro

Gaming Phone of the Year 2019

A brand-new award category this year, the nominees for this segment are:

Winner: ASUS ROG Phone II

ASUS’ Republic of Gamers brand doesn’t need any introduction. So when the Taiwanese company announced its foray into the gaming smartphone segment, everyone’s interest was piqued. And while the original ROG Phone set the tone, the ROG Phone II simply took things to the extreme. From a display with a high refresh rate of 120Hz to the best-in-class 6,000mAh battery, and from the all-powerful Snapdragon 855+ chipset to as much as 12GB of RAM, the phone wins this award by a fair margin. It’s priced quite attractively too.

Runner’s up: OnePlus 7T Pro

Most Innovative Phone of the Year 2019

Before we get to the winner, a look at the nominees:

Winner: Samsung Galaxy Fold

Innovation can be described in many ways, but if there’s one device from 2019 that truly deserves this tag, it has to be the Samsung Galaxy Fold. A phone that converts into a tablet and yet fits into your pocket certainly screams innovation, and possibly, paves the way for smartphones of the future. It’d be wrong to justify the phone’s proposition with just specs, but it’s worth mentioning that it offers flagship-class specs along with as many as six cameras.

Runner’s up: OPPO Reno 10x Zoom

Brand of the Year 2019

The nominees for this highly coveted category are:

  • Apple
  • OnePlus
  • OPPO
  • Realme
  • Samsung
  • Vivo
  • Xiaomi

Winner: Realme

Realme is a brand that has been making all the right moves since its inception in May 2018. In such a short span of time, the OPPO offshoot has been moving from strength to strength, and expanding its portfolio very aggressively. In 2019, Realme introduced never-seen-before features such as a quad-camera setups, 64MP camera, sensors and 50W fast charging. The best part is that despite launching so many phones, the brand stuck to its mojo of offering excellent bang for the buck.

Runner’s up: Xiaomi

Phone of the Year 2019

The nominees for the penultimate prize in our awards list are:

  • Apple iPhone 11 Pro
  • Huawei P30 Pro
  • OnePlus 7T Pro
  • Realme XT Pro
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10+

Winner: Apple iPhone 11 Pro

The fact that the iPhone 11 Pro already has two awards in its kitty – the Selfie Phone of the Year and the Camera Phone of the Year – certainly helped its cause. But there’s more to the iPhone 11 Pro than its cameras, be it the ultra-fast A13 Bionic chip, or the long-lasting battery with 18W fast chargers bundled with the retail packaging. The phone ticks all the right boxes and then some more, and emerges as the winner of the Phone of the Year 2019.

Runner’s up: Huawei P30 Pro
