Allow media report Sectoral Oversight Committee sittings - Ashu
UNP MP Prof. Ashu Marasinghe says he will ask the Speaker to allow the news media to cover the Sectoral Oversight Committee (SOC) sittings in Parliament.
Addressing the daily media briefing held at Temple Trees yesterday, he said that the entire nation should get to know the nature of the Sectoral Oversight Committees. There were 16 SOCs in Parliament and with the opening of the sectoral oversight committees to the news media, the public would be able to get an idea of how MPs are involved in policy making, he added.
These are the forums where Acts and Gazettes of Parliament are initially discussed, he pointed out. “Even ministers too can be summoned before the Committee for investigations. Therefore, it is important for the public to understand the powers of the SOC,” Marasinghe added.
“Already the COPE, COPA and the Parliamentary Select Committee probing the Easter Sunday attacks are open to the media allowing the public to gain information on the sittings of these Committees. Likewise, we appeal to the Speaker to consider allowing the Parliamentary Sectoral Oversight Committee on Education and Human Resource Development to be convened on September 17 with access provided to the media,” he said.
