Maha Metro’s work to connect ends across Variety Sq to start on 11th
The work to connect the ends of Nagpur Metro Rail project across Wardha Road at Variety Square is all set to start on February 11. The work is expected to be completed in 10 days. Till then, vehicular traffic across Shahid Gowari Flyover has been suspended. Maha Metro has dubbed the work as a ‘crucial phase’, as it connects the two important Metro Stations of Sitabuldi Inter-change and Zero Mile. The work involves connecting the ends across the two sides of Gowari Fly-Over. This is the second such instance in the recent past. Similar work had been executed at Jhansi Rani Square.
The work across Shahid Gowari Flyover will be executed at a height of 18.5 meters. The work on this stretch of North-South Metro Corridor assumes a lot of significance as the work is being executed on one of the busiest stretches of city roads.
According to Maha Metro officials, Variety Square is surrounded by a mall, shopping street, and bus depot on its three sides and hence the work is a ‘challenging’ one. The high volume of vehicular traffic on the road, coupled with the matching strength of pedestrians, who frequent the locality for a multitude of commercial establishments make the task ‘extremely challenging’, added a press release issued on Friday.
Considering the nature of work to be executed, Traffic Control Branch of Nagpur Police has suspended the vehicular traffic across Shahid Gowari Flyover.
A notification to this effect has been issued. The flyover will be opened to traffic only after the work is completed. However, road traffic will continue to ply as usual.
This work across Shahid Gowari Flyover is ‘climax’ of Phase-I of Nagpur Metro Rail project. Maha Metro appealed to the people to extend their co-operation for smooth completion of the work. The work at Variety Square involves connecting two ends across the Flyover with steel composite girder.
A total span of 44 meters will, thus, be erected in the process. Two cranes with capacity of 400 MT and 220 MT will be required for the work. The steel girders will be lifted one by one with the help of two cranes and then erected.
The work of erecting the girder will continue throughout the day and night till the task is over.
The entire work will be executed under supervision of senior officials of Maha Metro and the company engaged in the work, and in co-ordination with Traffic Control Branch of City Police. Maha Metro also will deploy its Quick Response Team for traffic management and other tasks.
