Here’s what you need to know about the ending of Andhadhun
Ayushmann Khurrana’s latest Bollywood film, , released last week on October 5 and has garnered close to ₹20 crore at the box office within the first five days. A comic thriller starring Ayushman Khurranna, Radhika Apte and Tabu, the Sriram Raghavan directorial opened to majorly positive reviews. Though the film stars some of the Hindi film industry’s most popular actors, it is anything but a mainstream Bollywood flick. Based on the French short film , has left viewers trying to unravel its unpredictable and somewhat complex. And if you are one of those, we might have some answers to explain ending to you.
Andhadhun climax: Here’s what you need to know about Ayushmann Khurrana’s movie ending
The plot of revolves around a pianist who pretends to be blind to ‘fine tune’ his artistic sensibilities until a twist of fate lands him bang in the middle of a murder investigation. The film flows pretty smoothly until the last bit, which is left open-ended for the audience to interpret.
Now, let’s fast forward to climax: where an apparently blind Ayushmann Khurrana kicks a can out of his way with his support cane (which has a rabbit carved on the handle) is perhaps one of the most significant aspects in the entire movie. This is when you, as a viewer, realise that he isn’t blind after all. But when did he get his vision back?
If you analyse the events that lead up to the climax of , here’s what you’ll find: Simi (Tabu’s) car is about to ram into Akash (Ayushmann Khurrana). But the vehicle swerves away from the road and blows up because a rabbit hits the windshield while it’s trying to dodge a hunter’s bullet. You’d automatically connect the handle of Akash’s support cane which, has a prominent rabbit – presumably as a metaphor for the same one that saved his life. Or so you think.
But what if the whole accident never took place? According to a couple of fan theories, there are other possibilities that could have occurred. While the above series of events is what Akash reveals to Sophie (Radhika Apte) when they bump into each other in London two years later, let’s also consider that either one of the following situations could’ve taken place.
Andhadhun ending fan theories are saying
According to a user’s analysis on a Quora thread, the half-blind rabbit was a metaphor for Ayushmann’s character, which basically means he could see with one eye. But that doesn’t explain how he couldn’t escape Simi’s brutal attempt to murder him a while before the climax. Another viewer is of the opinion that Khurrana’s character may not have been blinded by Tabu’s character at all.
In the last scene, Akash’s support cane with the rabbit handle surely means something and isn’t purely a coincidence. If he thought that the rabbit was lucky for him since it saved his life, he couldn’t have been blind, else he wouldn’t have been able to see the rabbit in the first place.
Another theory suggests that maybe Simi, Tabu’s character, didn’t die. Instead, she probably took him to London and helped him get a cornea transplant. Or maybe he used her cornea after she died. Or, he just took the doctor’s deal and cooked up the entire climax for Radhika Apte’s character to seek her sympathy. But it’s unclear which of these could’ve happened — if any of them happened at all — because we’re yet to come across a solid theory that explains it all.
