Former Zimbabwe captain Alistair Campbell has praised Prithvi Shaw for his superlative century on Test debut saying he exhibits the mental toughness that belies his young age.
Shaw. has had a memorable year during which he led India to title victory at the U-19 World Cup in New Zealand and then scored plenty of runs while playing for India A.
Shaw, who scored hundreds on Ranji and Duleep Trophy debuts, played his first Test in Rajkot and scored 134 off 154, hitting 19 fours. He became the youngest from India to score a century on Test debut and the way he batted, he drew comparisons with batting legends of the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag.
What he did on his Test debut was unbelievable, Campbell was quoted as saying by The Hindu on Thursday. I like his technique and the way he plays so late. He is mentally more advanced than his years. When you have a Sachin Tendulkar as mentor, you have good chances of succeeding.
Batting legend VVS Laxman had too pointed out the maturity that 18-year-old Shaw showed in his first international match saying, "That he understands his game so well at such a tender age, and is also mature way beyond his years, indicate that he one for the long haul.
Such was Shaw's impressive knock that it overshadowed India captain Virat Kohli's record-breaking 24th Test century. For Campbell, Kohli's ability to score runs across formats makes puts him at the top of the ladder among the current batsmen. Whatever format you put him in, he delivers. He is the best batsman in the world at the moment, Campbell said.
Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) is going through a tough financial period. Heath Streak had earlier moved court seeking an order for the provisional liquidation of ZC, saying the board is no longer able to pay it s debts.
Campbell, who played 60 Tests and 188 ODIs for Zimbabwe, is happy with International Cricket Council's (ICC) intervention. You don t want that to happen, especially with Streak, one of your iconic players. I am glad that the ICC has intervened and ZC has realised that it has to put its house in order, the 46-year-old said..
