Christiana High advance to D'Cup second round

Jamaica Observer 2018-10-11 00:00:00

CHRISTIANA, Manchester — Christiana High qualified for the second round of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition for the first time in four years after playing out the last five minutes of their interrupted Zone G first-round game against Holmwood Technical yesterday.

Christiana High had led 1-0 when the game was blown off due to a field invasion and fighting on September 19, and held on for their second win over Holmwood Technical in four days after winning the return-round game 2-1 on Saturday.

The win took Christiana High to an unbeatable 19 points to top Zone G and left four other teams to battle out for the other automatic spot.

Twenty of the 32 second- round spots have now been taken with the other 12 expected to be filled by Saturday's final set of first-round games.

Also yesterday Alston High edged Knox College 1-0 in their rescheduled first-round game, their second 1-0 win over Knox in a week after beating them by the same margin in their second-round game played Saturday.

Alston High and Spalding are now tied on 15 points in second place with Holmwood Technical and Knox College on 14, all with a game to go.

Zone A leaders Brown's Town High could book their spot today when they take on Marcus Garvey High in a rescheduled Zone I game at Addison Park.

Brown's Town lead with 18 points and a win would be enough to top the zone for a second-straight season.

In Zone A, Anchovy High will seek to extend their slim hopes of advancing for the second time and first since the 2001 season when they take on Maldon High in a rescheduled return round game.

Anchovy High beat Green Pond 4-1 on Monday to be on 12 points and must win today if they are to catch second-placed St James High, who are on 17 points.
