The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today demanded immediate dismissal of the Punjab government due to complete collapse in the law and order situation in the state following its abject surrender to radical extremist forces and said this was tantamount to imposing a second emergency in Punjab. Stating this here, SAD spokesman and former minister Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said the Congress government had proved that it was incapable of maintaining law and order by refusing to give permission for holding of a peaceful rally at Faridkot scheduled for September 16. He said the government had submitted in writing that this permission was not being given because of pressure from radical groups who were sitting in 'dharna' around 35 kms away. Asserting that no government deserved to remain in power if it was incapable of maintaining rule of law, Dr Cheema said the government should be dismissed forthwith. He said arbitrary ban on holding democratic protests, which was a right given to each citizen as per the constitution, was intolerable. The Akali leader also pointed that the Congress government had vindicated the SAD's stand that it was incapable of maintaining peace and communal harmony by succumbing to pressure exerted by 100 to 150 radical elements. He said the government had in this process run away from its responsibility to provide protection to one and all. He said this had also proved that the government would be unable to ensure a peaceful poll in forthcoming panchayat elections. "This is the reason we had demanded deployment of para- military forces for elections to panchayat samitis and zila parishads", he added. The SAD also filed a writ petition in this regard in the Punjab and Haryana high court here in the court of Justice A K Mittal. The petition, which was filed by former Advocate General Ashok Aggarwal has urged for quashing of the state government's order refusing permission to the SAD to hold a rally at Faridkot on September 16. The petition been listed for hearing tomorrow. Dr Cheema said the petition put on record that the SAD was a peace loving party. He said it stated that the country's constitution gave citizens the right to protest against injustice in a democratic manner and this is what the SAD was doing under the Pol Khol rally series. "But it seems these rallies have unnerved the Congress government and proved that the popular sentiment of the people is with the SAD-BJP alliance. This is why the government is now using repressive tactics to muzzle democracy. We will fight this battle to the hilt in court as well as among the people to expose the Congress government and its nefarious designs", he added. UNI DB SY 1844
