Idamalayar dam to be opened by evening; Idukki at 2397.04 ft
Cheruthoni: With the water level in the Idamalayar dam continuing to rise due to the heavy rains, the dam will be opened on Wednesday itself. KSEB authorities have issued a red alert. It is learned that shutter of the dam will be opened for an hour and 164 cusecs of water would be released into the Periyar river. The maximum storage capacity of Idamalayar dam is 169 metres and the water level is at 168.52 metre presently.
Unlike other dams in the state, water level is gauged in metres in Idamalayar dam. Since heavy rain continues in the catchment areas, water flow is intense. Meanwhile, the district administration have informed that there is no need for panic.
Idamalayar was under blue alert last week which is the primary alert. Orange alert was issued when the water level reached 167.03 metre.
The rains intensified in the state again. Heavy rain continues in the northern districts. The water level in Idukki dam is increasing in an alarming rate. There is heavy rain in the catchment areas of the dam.
Idamalayar was opened earlier in 2013 and 900 cusecs water was released.
As the heavy rains continues to pour down in the area, water level in the Idukki dam is rising and has crossed 2397 ft. The recorded water level today at 3 pm is 2397.04 ft.
Water flowing to the dam has increased since the last 12 hours. The catchment areas has heavy down pour on Wednesday. Weather department has warned of two more executive days rains. According to this, there are possibilities for the water level will reach 2398 ft on Thursday. Thus, trail run will be conducted on Thursday.
