Chennai: Weeks after Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) was registered as political party with Election Commission of India (ECI), the high-level committee comprising 16 members has been dissolved and an executive council has been formed with the same set of members.

Office-bearers will be appointed from tomorrow across the State to face forthcoming elections, sources told News Today.

Founder and president of MNM Kamal Haasan today hoisted the party flag at his Alwarpet office.

He announced on the occasion that professor Gnanasambandham will serve as vice-president, Arunachalam as general secretary and Suka as treasurer.

Sources in the party said, "The newly-floated executive council which will have all members of the high-level committee, will appoint in-charges for East, West, South and North zones of Tamilnadu, in consultation with Kamal Haasan. Beginning tomorrow, the council will sit down and allocate in-charges for each Assembly constituency. This will continue till taluk and town-levels."

They added, "Kamal Haasan was waiting for the recognition from Election Commission. Once he got their nod, the rejig and new appointments are being made. He has been taking efforts to ensure that MNM should be ready to contest whichever elections come next in the State  - local body polls, Lok Sabha or Assembly elections."

Membership enrollment has also begun and all efforts are being taken to reach the nook and corner of the State, he added.

It may be recalled that Kamal Haasan on 20 February launched Makkal Needhi Maiam.

Speaking at the launch event in Madurai, he said, "You must be an example to the present day political system and I will be seeking your suggestion rather than giving you speeches."

"We dream a new party, a new path, a new policy. Let people awake in 'People's Justice'," he said.

He had said that he was 'picking ideologies from everyone' before the launch of his party.

Following the party flag hoisting event at Alwarpet MNM office today, traffic came to standstill in the area. Motorists had a tough time crossing the stretch.

When this was brought to his notice, the actor-politician tendered apology for causing hindrance to public and promised that no such incident would occur in future.
