Chennai: The terrace of most homes are used to dry clothes, chillies or vadams. A few are used to set up a garden.

In Arisikaran street, Mylapore, in the city, the terrace of M Krishna has been put to a different use. Krishna has converted his terrace to a cricket turf.

It is an astro turf which gives a natural feeling and it is the first of its kind in Mylapore. The entire area measures 22 yards in length and 7 yards in breadth and is enclosed within a net of fifteen feet on the top and sides. Here, he trains boys in batting techniques including grip and strokes. There are no bowling classes. The training is one-to-one for an hour for every child. The area has also been fitted with flood lights so that classes can be taken after dusk.

Krishna’s love for cricket like most people began from his childhood days. The home was his ground and his father Mukundan, his unofficial coach. As Krishna grew, his passion for the game also grew.

“I never took any formal coaching. I used to play with my father and friends almost daily. The constant exposure made me a good player and I played league matches and, in my college team. After I completed my MBA, I wanted to do something on my own which had a connection to sports especially cricket. I worked as a coach at the cricket association of St Patricks school for four years and then coached boys at Royapettah YMCA for two years. At this point, I thought that I could use the space on the terrace of my home at Arisikaran Street to train boys in the game. So, I started Krishna Cricket Coach Academy and set up this field,” says Krishna.

The youngster is planning to convert this area into an indoor stadium in the future by enclosing all sides with sheets. This would help the training continue, come rain or shine.

Why do many children take up cricket coaching?

Krishna says, “Tendulkar and Dhoni have made the game popular. Media has constantly been telecasting matches and people have been hearing the success stories of many in the field. So the game is a hit with youngsters.”

His family members have also welcomed the turf on their home as it helps them relax.

“I go and play with my son whenever I have time and it is so relaxing and refreshing,” says Krishna’s father with a smile.
