Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals broke the trend of chasing teams winning the contest in IPL 2018 by registering the first victory of the side that chose to bat first. The Royals registered a 19-run victory over hosts Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Chinnaswamy Stadium today. The high-scoring contest saw 415 runs scored in the 40 overs, indicating how unkind it was for the bowlers. Besides the spinners, particularly Shreyas Gopal for RR and Yuzvendra Chahal for RCB, no bowler was spared on either side.

Who won today’s IPL match between RCB and RR

Last evening, Mustafizur Rahman found himself bowling the final over with 11 runs to defend against Jason Roy and Shreyas Iyer, the latter who the Mumbai Indians fast bowler had dropped twice in the overs before. Delhi Daredevils ran away with the game as a result. Jos Buttler and the Royals would have feared the worst when the wicketkeeper first missed a stumping off AB de Villiers, and then failed to collect the ball to run him out the very next over.

De Villiers, however, hit straight to deep square leg in Shreyas Gopal’s very next over, while Kohli found the same fielder in the following one to derail the run chase. Mandeep Singh’s unbeaten 25-ball 47 and Washington Sundar (35) pushed it until the end, but 36 runs off the last over were too many to get. RCB were left to rue four of their batsmen hitting long hops straight to fielders which eventually proved to be the difference.

Chasing a monumental 218, RCB needed their top four to fire, but their star-studded top order was jolted early, with Brendon McCullum picking out Ben Stokes on the midwicket boundary in the first over, bowled by Krishnappa Gowtham. Kohli and Quinton de Kock, however, staged a stunning counterattack to add 77 in the next seven overs. The hosts raised 100 in the first 10 overs, but Kohli (57) and de Villiers’s (20) wickets within two overs changed the course of the run chase.

An indifferent start became a position of strength by keeping wickets in hand early. Rajasthan Royals capitalized in the middle overs as Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 92 powered them to 217 for four, the highest total in IPL 2018. The notoriously short boundaries of the Chinnaswamy Stadium were peppered by Samson, who hammered 10 sixes and a four in his 45-run blitz and shared two important partnerships, first with Ben Stokes (27) and Jos Buttler (23) and outscored both of them.

The Royals, however, began nervously, with D’Arcy Short unable to break free against RCB’s spinners and his hesitancy continued between wickets, although neither partner ran each other out this time. However, Rahane got going and made up for Short’s struggles with a brisk 36. Both openers, though, fell on either side of the Powerplay.

Samson and Stokes first nurdled the ball around before launching into the bowlers after the half-way mark, taking 49 from overs 11-14. While RCB spinners Washington Sundar (0/30) and Yuzvendra Chahal (2/22) applied the brakes, the quick bowlers disappeared, with Umesh Yadav leaking 59 from his four overs. The last over of the innings went for 27 as Samson finished just eight short of an incredible century, continuing his rich vein of form in the early stages of the competition.
