Sanju’s 92 not out powers RR to 19-run win over RCB
BENGALURU: Rajasthan Royals registered their second successive win of the season as they beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 19 runs at the M Chinnaswamy stadium on Sunday, as reported by India Today.
The high-scoring match match in Bengaluru saw Rajasthan successfully defend 217 runs as the home team were restricted to 198 for 6 in 20 overs with captain Virat Kohli top-scoring with 57 off 30 balls while Mandeep Singh remained unbeaten on 47 from 25 balls.
Shreyas Gopal was the star of the show with the ball for the Royals as he removed the dangerous Kohli and de Villiers in quick succession to land a telling blow on RCB. Ben Laughlin, D'Arcy Short, Ben Stokes and Krishnappa Gowtham picked up a wicket each to ensure victory for their side.
"Feels good. We all know how dangerous RCB are. We were thinking of getting 160-170, wicket was a bit slow. But the way Sanju batted was incredible. It was all about getting that one big partnership. Knee is better. Slight niggle but will be fine. Shreyas bowled really well.”
"We know when you score 200-plus, opponents will come hard. Sanju is a great talent, good to have him in our team. He's the future for India and we back him," Rahane said at the post-match presentation.
Kohli's fifty was his 31st fifty for RCB and his fastest in the T20 format as it came in just 26 balls. But his valiant knock went in vain as his team suffered its second defeat of the season.
Earlier, it was Sanju Samson's unbeaten 92 off 45 balls helped the Royals post a mammoth 217 for 4 after they were put into bat. Captain Ajinkya Rahane contributed with 36 runs while Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler made 27 and 23 respectively.
"Feel very grateful to play this tournament every two months of the year. Playing an innings like this is a dream come true.
"I'm feeling good, hitting the ball well. Would like to keep up the form and win as many matches as I can. Whatever my team wants me to do, I'll do it - whether it's fielding or keeping," Man of the Match Samson said.
Yuzvendra Chahal was the pick of the bowlers for RCB while Chris Woakes also picked up 2 wickets.
Rajasthan are now third on the points table while RCB dropped down to 6th with just 2 points from 3 games.
