Chennai: Even as the gutkha scam issue witnessed tense moments in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Friday leading to the walk out of the DMK, the income tax department has made a startling revelation- that it has found a secret letter in the room of V K Sasikala at the residence of late chief minsiter J Jayalalithaa.

When a case related to the gutkha scam came up for hearing in the Madras high court, the counsel representing the I-T department said that its officials recently seized a letter sent to the then chief minister by the then director general of police.

The income tax department had originally sent the letter on gutkha issue to the DGP, which was forwarded by him to the chief minister. It was found during the I-T raided conducted at the Poes Garden residence of Jayalalithaa in November last year.

The I-T department has also said that a gutkha businessman had claimed to have bribing a state minister.

On Thursday, MLAs from the main opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam staged a walk out from the Tamil Nadu Assembly, protesting the state government's order to transfer vigilance commissioner VK Jeyakodi, who was investigating the gutkha scam, to the land administration department.

In late July 2017, the Madras high court had directed the Tamil Nadu government to post an officer with independent charge to monitor the probe into the gutkha scam, which allegedly involves some big names.
