I meant low-level not low-born: Aiyar’s apology for ‘neech remarks’

New Delhi: Hours after calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “neech aadmi”, Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar apologises for his comment.

Speaking to reporters, Aiyar attempted an apology by first explaining the context in which the remarks were made.

Aiyar said the word “neech” has many connotations and he never intended to comment on the Prime Minister’s caste.

“I never meant low-born. There is a difference in English language between words ‘low’ and ”low-born’. But in Hindi if low means low-born, then I tender apology,” he told reporters after his remarks triggered a political storm.

“I am not an official spokesperson of the Congressmen. I am a freelance Congressman,” Aiyar added.

Aiyar’s carefully crafted apology to Narendra Modi came after Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi condemned the remarks and said that Congress and he “expects him to apologise for what he said”.

“The BJP and PM routinely use filthy language to attack the Congress party. Congress has a different culture and heritage. I do not appreciate the tone and language used by Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar to address the PM. Both the Congress and I expect him to apologise for what he said”, tweeted Rahul Gandhi.
